Site Survey and Evaluation

Knowing what you have and what you need to have at a transmitter site is an ever changing process. Whether you built the site, bought the site or are looking at buying or moving to the site, do you know what the actual condition is? Unless your transmitter and tower are collocated with the studio, chances are you do not know the current condition and what really needs attention or repair. An independent site survey can detect issues easily overlooked by people too close to the situation. Finding those issues before they become problems saves money and avoids costly and embarrassing down time.

There are a lot of factors to take into consideration when choosing a new transmitter site. It's not just a matter of finding a piece of property and sticking a tower there. Not only FAA and FCC approvals are needed, but in many cases, other federal agencies along with state and local government involvement are required. It is not difficult to spend thousands of dollars on a property only to find out it is unsuitable or impossible to use as a tower site. Most broadcasters will only have to find and develop a new tower site once or twice in the history of there station. It is extremely unlikely they will have anyone in their organization with experience in going through the various steps involved with the processes of finding a site and getting all the necessary approvals to get started. Getting a site evaluated prior to investing large sums into the project can save time, money, personnel resources and a lot of frustration.
