Periodic Inspection

TIA/EIA-222 section 14 recommends in addition to an initial inspection that all towers receive periodic inspections at a minimum of every three (3) years for guyed towers and every five (5) years for self-supporting towers. Depending on location, loading and age, this may not be sufficient. The periodic inspection is not as detailed as an acceptance inspection but follows the same criteria and is intended to advise the owner and his insurance company of the tower's condition. The tower is checked for plumb and tension as required, foundations and anchors are checked for integrity and the tower is visually inspected for damage, loose or defective members and condition of loads. Lights, elevator, electrical outlets, heaters or any other electrical devices need to be checked for corrosion, weather seals and function. All connections, fasteners, attachments and hangers should be check for rust, corrosion and general conditions. Guy wires need to be checked for rust, fraying or stress especially near the top and bottom attachment points. Any anomalies need to be documented with photographs and narrative descriptions.
